Hey Sara! Thanks for being the first in the series of the DenGro interviews.

Can you tell us about your role within DenGro?
Where to start? It’s such a varied role. I guess you could broadly break it down into two halves. The first is Support. I’m the voice you’ll hear when you’re having a demo or some training for DenGro. I support our existing users, and onboard new practices. Essentially, I make sure that everyone can use and understand DenGro to their advantage.

The second part of my role is more project management based. I keep track of a lot of the moving parts that make up DenGro. I make sure releases are, well, released on time, and this involves a certain amount of time and project management to make sure everything is on schedule. I break down what communications are needed and what ‘a new release’ will look like when it goes live to the DenGro audience.

How long have you worked here? What brought you to DenGro?
I’ve been with DenGro since early 2017, and my role has evolved with the company. I love that I’ve been an integral part of DenGro’s growth.

My background is actually in history, archives and museum management. Before joining DenGro, I worked in London in a few really interesting roles. I covered everything from working with old archives as a Library Assistant for the The Independent Newspaper, to donning full Victorian garb everyday for a role at the Sherlock Holmes Museum! One thing that was common to all of these jobs though, was talking to people. It’s something I really enjoy.

What does your average day look like?
A lot of my job is communication, so it’s plenty of interaction and talking to people. I support DenGro users and take them through demos, so that they have a ‘real person’ explaining the value of the tool and how their team can get the most from it. We designed DenGro to help practices, so we engage with them in a really personal way. So, if you’re using DenGro – hi there! Do you have a favourite day-to-day tool that you use for managing work effectively?
We use a number of tools across DenGro, and I tend to dip in and out of all them. There’s a lot of different roles in the business, so different teams have their preferences. The Development team, for example, use Jira to build up tickets for releases. I use Teamwork for scheduling tasks and keeping an eye on deadlines. We also use Aha! for collating new ideas and suggestions from users. From here, we can assess what’s coming up next, and what ideas can be up-voted; it’s a great collaborative tool.

What's the best thing about working at DenGro?
The people. It might be a clichéd answer, but the people at DenGro really make coming to work enjoyable. I get to talk to everyone who plays a part, and of course to the people who use it. It’s great to talk to users and hear what they have to say – the good and the bad. I love talking to practices who are really engaged and excited about using DenGro, who want to learn what else they can do, and make really good suggestions. But it’s equally satisfying when you can help solve concerns and issues. DenGro’s a young company, and feedback is important.

There’s been a Sara shaped hole in the DenGro team these last two weeks. Where have you been?
I have just come back from 10 days in Vancouver, Canada, for one of my best friend’s weddings. It was great to see a lot of family and friends and head back to old haunts. Plus my sister came over for it – she lives in California – so it was super special to spend some time with her.

Working in a busy organisation, what do you do to keep calm and focussed?
Three things: breathing exercises (no joke); talking things through with an amazing team of colleagues, and most importantly, reviewing the latest giphs on Giphy! We all get stressed at work, and you’ve got to take time out sometimes just to re-focus. If I’m really going round in circles, I’ll literally take my feet to the stairs – by which I mean I’ll go for a little walk up and down the stairs of our office. I heard that just walking through a doorway readjusts your mindset – that’s why you forget things when you go out of a room – and the same applies when you just need to shift your perspective.

What’s coming up for DenGro?
Pretty soon we'll be releasing new updates to the automated messages in DenGro. We’ve been working on these to make them more tailored to practices, and to include more treatments, so keep an eye out for that. In terms of plans further down the line, we’re exploring ‘Campaigns’ from DenGro, so practices will be able to better re-target leads and bring in more private patients.

Any advice for someone who would like to start a career in marketing?
If you don’t have any experience, don’t let that hold you back. I didn't follow a traditional career path into this role, but I would say that my varied career background has been an advantage. Just get stuck in, whether or not you’ve worked in marketing before or not. That brings me nicely to the second piece of advice: talk to people. Talk to everyone, so you understand the ins and outs of what you’re marketing; then, lastly but most importantly, listen to your customers.
